One weekend. Three Trophies – Cricket Fiji Association Cup

Isaac Lockett reports on the conclusion of the Cricket Fiji Association Cup

-

This weekend saw the conclusions of the Cricket Fiji Association Cup. Previously, it was reported that the tournament not only reintroduced 50 over cricket back to the country after almost a decade but that Cricket Fiji would use the performances to aid national squad selection.

With national place squads up for grabs, the players were playing for more than just silverware over the weekend. With the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier scheduled for 2021, it was a perfect opportunity for players to put their name forward for selection. Coming into the final, which was being played at Albert Park, of the Cricket Fiji Association Cup, Suva Cricket team were the favorites to lift the title. Coming into the final as favorites can often create added pressure on the team, however, Suva rose to the occasion. Batting first in the 50 over final, Suva scored 310/9 from their allocated overs meaning that their opponents, Ono-i-Lau, would need to score at over 6 runs an over from the start. However, Ono-i-Lau were unable to build any momentum during their chase and were bowled out for 42 runs after 14th over. Peni Dakai Jnr was awarded presented with the man of the match award for his performance with the ball which saw him take 7 wickets and only conceded ten runs.

There were two finals played prior to the Cup final with the bowl and plate competitions also reaching their climax. Cicia won the bowl competition after beating the Cricket Fiji Invitational side by four wickets. Komo was crowned winners of the plate after the side beat Lakeba by five runs.

Cricket Fiji’s CEO Alex Konrote was quoted by The Fiji Times as saying that the Association would look to announce their sides for the upcoming male and female East Asia-Pacific Qualifiers in July next year. Fans of the Fiji national side will be waiting in anticipation to see whether players like Peni Dakai Jnr will be included in the national team’s plans during what promises to be an exciting year ahead.
