CRICKET IN HUNGARY

Although some cricket had been played in Hungary before World War I and the Sri Lankan consul made an abortive effort to reintroduce the game in 1996, it was not until ten years later that a group of expatriates, led by Andy Grieve and Andrew Leckonby joined forces to establish the modern HCA.  Interest among both expatriate communities and local Hungarians grew rapidly, and within a few years several clubs were taking place in a league competition, a dedicated ground was created at Szodliget outside Budapest, and Hungary had joined the ICC.

Unfortunately, ICC membership came too late for participation in the system of regional ICC tournaments, which were being run down by 2012, but Hungary takes part in unofficial tournaments each summer, and the national league continues to thrive. There are national men’s and women’s teams, and the HCA pursues an active programme of promotion of the game outside the expat communities which still form the core of Hungarian cricket.
