Cricket first became established alongside British involvement in the port wine trade. There has been a club in Porto since 1855 and they have been playing the Kendall Cup against a team from Lisbon for over 150 years. The sport remains concentrated in those two cities and the area in between although it has previously also been played down south in the Algarve.

The team competed regularly in multilateral European competitions around the turn of the century. They won the European Cricket Federation Nations Cup at the first attempt in 1995, and the European Affiliates Championship in 2001. Over the same period, they had notable success in the European Indoor Championships cricket, with three tournament wins.

After a few fallow years they are now also competing outdoors again, notching victories over Cyprus in the qualifying competition for the 2020 T20 World Cup, and two T20I wins v Gibraltar in the recently resurrected Iberia Cup.
