CRICKET IN PERU

Peru’s affiliation with cricket branches back to the mid 19 th century with Lima Cricket Club, the oldest cricket club in South America, founded in 1859. During the 1920s the first cricket ground was constructed in Magdalena with the first match against a foreign team when the Peruvian national team faced off against an MCC side returning from Australia via South America in 1927.

In the early 20th century domestic cricket was the only matchplay that took place in Peru until the late 1900s when a surge of British textile workers caused a rise in interest in the sport. Tours were arranged to Argentina, Columbia and Venezuela.

In December 1995 the first South American Cricket Championship took place with Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru taking place with the event happening biennially since.

In the early 2000s, domestic leagues were put in place with cricket beginning to firm as an attractive second choice to Peruvians who did not take an interest to football. In 2006 Peru’s application for Affiliate Membership to the ICC was accepted making the South American nation an official member of the ICC.

Into the 2010s an emphasis on junior development within cricket has seen participations numbers flourish with many youngsters around the nation taking to cricket. Alongside junior participation, in 2011 Peru entered a women’s team into the Female South American Championships for the first time making a significant milestone for the nation in its development.
