CRICKET IN BELGIUM

Although British troops famously played cricket at Enghien six days before the battle of Waterloo, it was not until the 1860s that the game began to establish a foothold in Belgium, which had acquired separate statehood in 1830. Confined at first almost entirely to the expatriate English community, cricket was nevertheless supported by Joseph, count d’Oultrement, who presided over the first Belgian federation until his death in 1942 and frequently captained the national side. In 1910 Belgium hosted a quadrangular tournament involving France, the Netherlands and an MCC side as part of the Brussels International Exhibition.

After a gap, during which cricket was mostly played by British forces stationed in Belgium, club cricket became re-established in the 1950s, principally playing against touring sides. New clubs were created, mainly based in the growing Indian and Pakistani communities, and by 1990 it was possible to re-form a national federation, which immediately applied successfully for ICC membership.

Cricket in Belgium is played with five-division league structure in its senior men’s section, T20 competitions, Women and youth competitions.

There are two regional federations in Belgium working together with the National Federation. Cricket Vlaanderen is a regional federation for cricket activities in Flanders region and Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles de Cricket is a regional federation for cricket activities in the Wallonia and Brussels region.

Belgium has been actively involved in the development of European cricket, hosting numerous ICC Europe tournaments and at one point reaching Division 8 of the World Cricket League.
