Day 7, the penultimate of the first leg of the ICC Challenge League B in Oman, registered comfortable wins for Uganda and Jersey, the two teams that have completed their schedule.
The Uganda – Hong Kong game had the first place on the line with the eventual winner destined to wear the virtual leader’s jersey at the end of this first round robin. The players from the peninsula, having been put in to bat, never got going, finding runs difficult to come. Top scorer Waqas Barqat’s 27 off 43 balls tells the story of the innings that eventually folded up for 147 after 47.5 overs, Billal Hassun ending up with 3/33. In their reply, at 40/4 in the 14th over, Uganda were in a spot of bother before skipper Arnold Otwani, 66 off 112 balls, and Dinesh Nakrani, 57 off 66, saw them comfortably home with 82 balls to spare.
Jersey 113 for 4 (Dunford 35, Stevens 28, Brangman 1-21) defeated Bermuda 110 (Rawlins 31, Leverock 22, Miles 4-8, Birrell 4-20) by 6 wickets with 183 balls remaining.
Bermuda, the only winless team in the tournament, came into the game against Jersey not certain what format of cricket was being played. As usual the atlantics started at a gallop and looked doing fine at 76/3 after 12 overs minus one ball. Then the dismissal of Onias Bascome triggered a collapse that saw the whole team bowled out for 110 in 23 overs. Daniel Birrel and Elliot Miles shared the bowling honours for Jersey with four wickets each. After the early loss of Nick Greenwood, Jake Dunford, 35 off 50, and Ben Stevens, 28 off 25, gave the channel men all the stability that Bermuda had lacked, Jersey finishing the job in the 20th over with six wickets to spare.
With Jersey and Uganda already airborne, the event draws to a close tomorrow with Kenya playing Hong Kong and Bermuda facing Italy.
