CRICKET IN ROMANIA
Cricket was recorded in Romania in 1893, when a game was organised for a visiting relative of Queen Victoria. Following this, cricket had a long wait before being taken up again in the early years of the twenty first century. At first there were just a few teams playing friendlies; this grew into the formation of the Romanian Cricket Federation in 2009, and to the present 8-team league. Now, the men’s national teams have begun to participate in bilateral and multi-team tournaments in Europe. They were scheduled to enter qualifying for the 2021 T20 World Cup, their first global event. Their T20I debut came in 2019 when they hosted the Continental Cup, winning 3 out of 4 games yet finishing third. Also in 2019, national team member Pavel Florin received worldwide social media attention while playing at the European Cricket League for Romanian T20 champions Cluj. The first T20I for the Romanian women’s team was scheduled for 2020, against Turkey, but has now been postponed till 2021 because of coronavirus.
