CRICKET IN JERSEY
The history of cricket in the Bailiwick of Jersey goes back around 150 years to the 1860s. The Jersey Island Cricket Club was established in 1922 and the self-governing British Crown dependency shares a long rivalry with their Channel Island neighbours, Guernsey, with matches between them dating back beyond even the start of the formalised annual inter-insular matches in 1950 that continue to this day. A Channel Islands Cricket Board was formed in 1996 and became a member ‘county’ of the ECB, until further development of the game on the islands lead to the formation of the Jersey Cricket Board and both nations successfully applying for membership of the European Cricket Council and Affiliate member status within the ICC in 2005 (Associate members since 2007). The JCB won two honours at the 2009 ICC International Development Awards: The Spirit of Cricket award for bringing the game to a group of young offenders at the island’s La Moye prison; and the Best Marketing Award for their work on the 2008 WCL Division Five tournament. Domestically, more than 30 clubs compete in weekend, evening, indoor and age group competitions. There is also a strong development programme in place, with fully-qualified coaches working with youngsters throughout the year. Women’s cricket is also growing rapidly on the island. On the international front, Jersey were regular participants in divisions four to six of the World Cricket League from 2008 to 2018 and currently compete in the new ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League. They have also competed in two global qualifiers for the T20 World Cup, achieving impressive victories against established opposition in the form of Hong Kong and Nepal in 2015, followed by UAE and Oman in 2019.
