Germany’s women will host their French counterparts for a five-match T20 International series in July, the first time these two nations will play each other in an official WT20I. The games will offer vital preparations to both sides for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, which will take place in late August.
The Deutscher Cricket Bund (DCB) announced, on Twitter, that the series would be hosted at the new national performance centre in Krefeld. The Krefeld centre has allowed Germany to greatly expand their home fixture offering this year. The men’s side will host a quadrangular tournament there in May featuring France, Norway and Spain.
The series will be fiercely contested, as Germany and France are ranked 25th and 30th respectively in the WT20I rankings. France, especially, will be eager for the preparation before their path to the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup starts in Scotland on August 26th. The European qualifier, which also features Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands and Turkey, will be France Women’s first appearance at an ICC event.
Germany will aim to use the series to prepare for tougher challenges against Scotland and Netherlands, who comfortably beat the Golden Eagles at the 2019 European Women’s World T20 Qualifier.
Fans of European cricket will be hoping that the series receives similar coverage to Germany’s series against Austria in 2020. The European Cricket Network (ECN) streamed every match of that series live, which Germany won 5-0. The streams received encouraging viewing numbers and therefore there is a strong chance of ECN coverage in July.
Details of possible live streams, as well as exact fixture dates, will be revealed closer to the series start.
