New census data from ICC Europe has revealed another positive rise in infrastructure and participation across the continent’s Associate Member nations.
Collected from 32 members across the region, more than 250,000 players engaged in recorded cricket activity in 2024, an increase of 37% since 2022, marking Europe as one of the stronger growth regions in the global game.
The numbers reflect the efforts of national boards, clubs, volunteers and development programs targeting schools and young adults, with an increase also coming from migrant communities across the continent.
Hardball participation jumps sharply
A standout figure from the census is the growth in traditional hardball cricket, with a 32% increase over the last two years to an estimated figure of 41,500 players.
Junior hardball cricket recorded the sharpest climb of all participation categories, climbing 42% to around 10,000 of the 45,000.
Female participation accelerating at record pace
A rapid expansion of the women’s game has been reflected with a growth of 75% in female competitive players, taking the total to more than 9,000 participants, and aided by the likes of dedicated coaching programmes, the introduction of women’s-only leagues and visibility from ICC pathway events.

Infrastructure keeps pace with demand
To support the growth on the field, work has been done across Europe’s members to compensate.
The region now boasts more than 600 permanent outdoor cricket grounds, ranging from purpose-built national centres to revamped club facilities, as members aim to move from shared spaces.
In addition, over 7,000 coaches, umpires and paid staff are now involved in delivering cricket across Europe, ensuring development is on pace to keep up with participation demand.
