Eurowrap: Farmers start 40-over campaign with defeat

Jersey T20 champions Farmers Caesareans started their 40-over Premier Division campaign with a defeat on Saturday, losing to the Jersey Under-19 side by a thumping 116 runs at FB Fields.

Josh Lawrenson and Asa Tribe were in fine form with the bat for the juniors, putting on 76 for the third wicket, and after Lawrenson departed for a run-a-ball 62 Tribe saw his side through almost to the end, eventually falling for 65, also at a run a ball, as the U19s ran up 221 for seven.

Farmers had no answer to this and collapsed to 105 all out in 28.3 overs, only William Perchard (23) and Ric Firth (15) reaching double figures. Toby Clark claimed three for 22 for the U19s, with two wickets apiece for Tribe and Lawrenson.

At Grainville Walkovers, who had the previous week been on the receiving end of a Jonty Jenner century as they went down to a six-wicket defeat by Old Victorians, were no match for St Ouen Springfield, whose 193 for nine was built on 50 from Dominic Blampied, supported by 35 from Tony Kay and 39 from Jack Maton.

With Kay taking three for 13 and Jonathan Best four for 21 Walkovers, again fully living up to their name, soon crumbled to 27 for seven, and it took some late resistance to enable them to limp to 95 before, a man short, they were all out in 31 overs.

Ishøj suffered their first defeat of the season in Denmark’s Elite Division on Saturday, losing by 93 runs at Skanderborg.

Nicolaj Damgaard made a quick 44 after the home side elected to take first use of the wicket, and then skipper Rizwan Mahmood contributed 66, included six fours and two sixes, to Skanderborg’s total of 215 for eight.

When Ishøj replied Delawar Khan, who had taken three for 25 in the Skanderborg innings, made 60 from 59 deliveries with four fours and as many sixes but, coming in at 28 for four, he largely stood alone, and with Oliver Hald taking four for 27 and Christian Peck three for 16, the visitors were dismissed for 122 in just 26.2 overs.

They did much better at Herning on Sunday, reaching 241 for nine; Delawar was again in the runs with 44, but it was captain Pawan Kumar’s 41-ball 64 not out which saw them to a pretty imposing total.

It was all in vain, however, for before Herning could begin their reply the rain descended, and the match was abandoned without the home side facing a ball.
At Frederiksberg KB owed their total of 193 to contrasting innings from contrasting innings from anchorman Zameer Khan, whose 78 came from 149 deliveries, and Saran Aslam, who smacked 44 from just 34.

It was more than enough to defeat Svanhom, who took 43.4 overs to compile 129, Abdullah Mahmood the top-scorer with a patient 38.

Nobody in either attack claimed more than two wickets, but a key role was played by KB’s Bashir Khan, whose ten overs yielded two wickets at a cost of only 7 runs.

KB and Skanderborg now head the table with eight points from five games, with Svanholm, having played a match more, also on eight points.

In Italy 40 clubs last week began contesting the Men’s T20 championship, playing in eight groups of five.

After three days’ play, mostly of double-headers, Bergamo United are unbeaten in Group A, ahead Albano and Bergamo, while in Group B Fresh Tropical, Cantù and Bogliasco are locked together with three wins and one defeat.

Brescia and Milan United are level at the top of Group C, and Bologna head Group D, one win clear of Cricket Stars, who do, however have a game in hand.

A similar situation exists in Group E, with Venezia one win ahead of Padova, while Valdarno and Neputinia are unbeaten in Group F.

Napoli have won four out of four in Group G, one win ahead of Rome Bangla and Royal Roma, and in Group H Kent Latina have the same perfect record, with Asian Latina also unbeaten but having played a game fewer.

In the Women’s Hoofdklasse in the Netherlands, Voorburg retained their unbeaten record with a five-wicket victory over Rood en Wit Haarlem, while Quick Haag, thanks to a brisk 62 from Annemijn Thomson, needed only 23.1 overs to complete a six-wicket win over Ajax Leiden and consolidate their second place on the table.
