Previously, Emerging Cricket reported that Canadian International Nitish Kumar was invited to train with the Leeward Island Hurricanes squad prior the announcement of the squad that will be participating during this year’s CG Insurance Regional Super50 Cup.
In an interview, Kumar expressed his desire to play for the Hurricanes during the tournament. Now he will be in contention to play in the teams’ first game against the Windward Island Volcanoes on February 7th.
The Hurricanes squad will be led by former West Indian International Devon Thomas, while Leeward Islands stalwart Montcin Hodge will serve as the team’s vice-captain. Another notable inclusion in the group is West Indies U19 international Ashmead Nedd who impressed during the 2020 edition of the Under-19 World Cup with eleven wickets in six matches.
Alongside Nedd’s left-arm spin, fans of the USA national will also be aware of the talent that Hayden Walsh Jr. brings to the squad. Walsh impressed with his leg-spin during his time with the American national side before cementing his place in the West Indies squads.
When comparing this year’s side with the side that previously represented the Leeward Islands in the competition, it is evident that there are many changes. Perhaps the two most significant absentees from last years squad are West Indian internationals Rahkeem Cornwall and Alzarri Joseph. Spin bowling all-rounder Cornwall’s absence means that there is the possibility that Kumar will be slotting straight into the Leeward Islands middle order and is tasked with fulfilling a similar role as Cornwall.
With Kumar having the ability to bat anywhere in the order and make meaningful contributions with the ball, fans will be hoping to see him being given an opportunity to showcase his talent during the competition.
