Scotland fought bravely against a giant in the kit World Cup, though it was the heavy public strength of Nepal that edged the first knockout match of the EC World Cup of Jerseys.
In the second Round of 16 match-up, it’s pink against orange in a battle of the brights! Before we preview that clash, here is the bracket for the final 16!
Tanzania and Nepal progressed from Group A, while Vanuatu and Scotland 1999 progressed in Group B. The Pink of Bermuda stormed home and Rwanda scraped enough votes across Twitter and Facebook to squeeze through in Group C and Group D was domination by the Dutch, with both the current kit and the 1996 World Cup shirt running away from the field to advance.
Germany took out Group E, topping both the Facebook and Twitter polls, with PNG’s Early 2010s kit overcoming a perhaps more-fancied Afghanistan 2015 effort. Group F saw the current Namibian kit run away in first, with St. Helena causing a huge upset, beating out Singapore by the barest of margins (a single vote!) across Facebook and Twitter polls. Kenya’s 1999 World Cup shirt stormed away in Group G, with the shirt (or jersey) from Jersey took second place across the Facebook Group and the Twitter page.
Note: Jerseys are the current kits used by both men’s and women’s teams unless stated.
Bermuda enter the knockout stages after topping Group C.
By no means the first team in cricket to play in pink, but when they switched their traditional red for fuschia, heads were turned.
A pink shirt with blue sleeves, the design was simple but bold, and enforced the caribbean-style flair and intensity with which the Gombey Warriors were playing as they upset the apple cart and beat the USA twice to reach the T20 Global Qualifiers. Whilst the shirt may not have brought them too much luck since, it represents the unique style and culture of the North Atlantic island which has made them a fan favourite in associate cricket.
Second in Group D, the Netherlands current shirt were the only thing stopping them from reaching top spot, and they’re the only country who have two chances of taking out the World Cup of Jerseys.
All the kits in 1996 followed the same template, but the Dutch orange that was thrown in the mix popped on our television sets. Even if ‘Holland’ was rushed across the front, the mix of orange with the dark blue, along with the rainbow template, was a strong combination.
The Dutch tasted World Cup cricket for the first time in the mid-1990s after finishing third in the ICC Trophy. They came up against UAE in the first World Cup clash between Associate teams in their last match, though missed the chance to claim their first victory in Lahore.
For the knockout stages of the tournament, a third poll via our Emerging Cricket Facebook page has been introduced. Instead of the four-way polls, team now go head-to-head to find a World Cup winner!
On top of the page, make sure you are a member of our Facebook Group and follow our Twitter pages to maximise your voting power when we post out the polls!
