EC World Cup of Jerseys QF1: Nepal v Bermuda

By Tom Grunshaw and Daniel Beswick

We’re down to the final eight!

Japan secured the final quarter-final place in the World Cup of Jerseys by brushing aside Kenya ’99, thanks to a heavy public backing from their own cricket association, who are keen to see their creation take home the trophy.

Here is the tournament bracket, as we started to crunch eight into four!

In the other matches of the knockout rounds Scotland fought bravely against a giant in the kit World Cup, though it was the heavy public strength of Nepal that edged things. Bermuda were also too strong for the Dutch 1996 World Cup kit, with Germany too strong for St. Helena. Jersey and Uganda both garnered great support throughout the 24 hours with the two highest votes of the the competition thus far, though it was Channel Islanders who pushed away late in their matchup. Vanuatu, making the most of their recent public support, brushed Tanzania aside, with the Netherlands, Namibia and Japan locking up the final spots.

The first quarter-final may be a mis-match in terms of the two teams’ population, though Bermuda’s strong voting numbers means this will be no walk in the park for tournament favourites Nepal, who carry a wave of fandom.

Let’s take a look at both kits!

Evolving from their smart dark blue and red combination in the mid-2010s, the current Nepal kit has gone unchanged for a couple of years now. Honestly, with something this good, why change something that isn’t broken?

A mix of red with a lighter blue than used in the past, Nepali peaks are thrown into the mix, and all the cliches about Nepal reaching for the summit Everest in their national sport don’t do it justice.

Bermuda

Bermuda were by no means the first team in cricket to play in pink, but when they switched their traditional red for fuschia, heads were turned.

A pink shirt with blue sleeves, the design was simple but bold, and enforced the caribbean-style flair and intensity with which the Gombey Warriors were playing as they upset the apple cart and beat the USA twice to reach the T20 Global Qualifiers. Whilst the shirt may not have brought them too much luck since, it represents the unique style and culture of the North Atlantic island which has made them a fan favourite in associate cricket.
