The Italian Cricket Federation has announced the return of women’s cricket in Italy with the launch of new Italian Women’s Cricket Championship (Campionato Femminile Cricket). The new competition ends a three-year hiatus, with the former Coppa Italia last played in 2017.
The new competition is a T20 tournament and will involve 6 teams. There are two groups of 3: Group A has Padova, Royal Padova and Lucca. Group B contains Kent Lanka CC, Roma, and Neptunia 2000. Group stage matches will take place on October 18th and 25th, with the final between group winners on 15th November. The final will serve as the last game of the Italian season.
Women’s domestic cricket in Italy has had an on and off history. The first tournament took place in 2001 but only ran for two years. The tournament next ran in 2009, the start of a much more successful period. The 2013 edition reached a peak of seven teams and two divisions, but steady decline from there saw the tournament abandoned after 2017. Over the ten seasons, five teams have each won two titles, but of these only Roma returns this year.
Due to rising coronavirus cases in Italy, the Italian Circket Federation has stopped all recreational cricket. Only matches as part of official Italian competitions may continue, and they must be played under coronavirus protocols. This includes the women’s championship, as well as the conclusion of the men’s Coppa Italia.
