Italy: Kings XI, Brescia Vie for double honours

Kings XI CC and Brescia CC will contest both of Italy’s cup finals this weekend. Both teams have successfully qualified for the final of the T20 Open and the Coppa Italia. Both matches will be played on Saturday 31st October and will be livestreamed via the European Cricket Network.

Kings XI, based in Bologna, have had a strong season, with 15 wins in 18 games across both competitions. Brescia, based in the northern province of Lombardia, have lost only two of their 18 games. Along the way, Brescia took wins over former European Cricket League representatives Janjua Brescia and 2019 champions Latina CC.

Both sides won their groups outright in the Coppa Italia, progressing to the knockout stages. However, the two teams were drawn together in the group stages of the T20 Open. Playing two matches against each other, Brescia won both fixtures. The Lombardian club will be keen to make use of the psychological advantage in the finals. Brescia won the group, though Kings XI progressed to the quarter-finals as the best second-placed team. Both sides progressed through their respective knockout games comfortably to reach the final.

If both sides win one trophy each, then they will play the Super Coppa, an annual fixture between the winners of each T20 tournament. Should either team win both tournaments, they do not contest the Super Coppa, such as in 2019 when Latina CC won both trophies. If required, the Super Coppa is scheduled for Sunday morning.

The timing of the fixtures creates an effective best-of-three series between the Kings XI and Brescia, with the first to win two matches taking top honours for the season. The winner will then play 2019 double-champions Latina CC in a European Cricket League playoff, which will be played on Sunday afternoon. The winner of the playoff will represent Italy at the 2021 European Cricket League at La Manga.
