Following the recent success of the Malaysian T10 Bash, which saw the Northern Strikers win the final, the Malaysian Cricket Association has taken the decision to delay the start of the MCA T20 Super Series. The tournament was originally scheduled to start on 28th August 2020, however, this has been delayed until the 15th September 2020.
The Malaysian Cricket Association stated in a press release that the postponement is to allow for national players to be provided with a bigger platform to showcase their talents, with it also being understood the Super Series may be seen by even more fans around the world beyond the MCA live stream as the Association mulls over the potential of broader distribution. The change in schedule is also designed to ensure that players are kept involved with cricket-related activities for a longer period of time, with the MCA extending the duration of the tournament to allow players the time to rest and prepare between games. Due to the ongoing pandemic, Malaysian cricketers faced a five-month break from the sport so being able to elongate a tournament will hopefully allow players time to find their form and hone their skill throughout the vent leading up to its Oct 18 final.
After the excitement of the T10 competition, there will be hope that the same four franchises will be able to deliver the same kind of exciting and dramatic performances, this time in the T20 format which aligns with the men’s national team’s upcoming campaign along the pathway to the 2022 T20 World Cup, assuming the revised 2021 qualification structure will be postponed a year or so. The tournament will again see the Northern Strikers, Southern Hitters, Central Smashers and the Western Warriors compete for the title and will provide spectators and analysts with the opportunity to watch how players adapt from the games newest shortest format to T20 cricket.
As is commonplace due to the global situation, the tournament will be played with extremely tight standard operating procedures to create an as safe as possible environment for players and officials. All the matches will be played without spectators, which makes the event’s live streaming even more crucial. Other safety measures being implemented by the Malaysian Cricket Association include the use of a contact tracing system which requires players to download the MySejahtera mobile application, wearing of face masks before and after matches, body temperature and symptoms screening, a limit on the number of participants and officials and disinfection of equipment after each use. Tournament officials also have strict protocols to follow with the requirement to display a MySejahtera application QR Code, preventing anyone with a temperature of 37.5 degrees Celcius or more or displaying Covid-19 symptoms from accessing the premises, ensuring an adequate number of personnel to enforce SOP and wearing of face masks by staff.
