Fred Klaassen selected in Hundred Wildcard Draft

Dutch national team left-armer Fred Klaassen has given his preparation for a T20 World Cup a boost after he was picked up by the Manchester Originals in today’s Hundred Wildcard Draft.

Turning out for Kent in county cricket, 28-year-old Klaassen was the fifth pick in essentially the competition’s final round, as the eight teams make their final touches before the July 21 tournament start.

Klaassen joins no less than four Dutch Men’s teammates in the competition, while on the Women’s side, Sterre Kalis will turn out for the Northern Superchargers. Klaassen is considered a domestic player, though will have a familiar teammate in Dutch off-spinner Colin Ackermann, also turning out at Old Trafford.

Klaassen has over fifty T20 appearances to his name across domestic and international action, taking a wicket roughly every twenty balls. Klaassen joined Kent in 2019 after impressing a year prior as part of a Dutch development touring squad, and has shown more control in this year’s T20 Blast thus far.

The inaugural tournament is shaping up to be a perfect hit out for the Dutch before their World Cup campaign, who must finish in the top two of their first round group to reach the Super 12 phase. The Netherlands went on to win the Qualifier in 2019, and should carry good memories heading into the global tournament.

Klaassen’s Originals meanwhile begin their campaign on opening night when they take on the Oval Invincibles.
