In Denmark’s Elite Division it was Herning’s turn for a double weekend in Copenhagen, and it proved to be one of extremely mixed fortunes.
First up they took on Svanholm, and suffered a crushing 246-run defeat.
Jonas Henriksen and Hamid Shah put on 127 for the first wicket for Svanholm, and after Henriksen departed in the 36th over for 85, Shah moved through the gears, taking only 45 deliveries to go from 50 to 100, and needing just 26 more to reach 142.
It scarcely seemed to matter than no-one else reached double figures: thanks to Hamid’s efforts, Svanholm closed on 272 for seven.
Despite this dominant performance with the bat few would have predicted what happened next, as Herning collapsed to 26 all out in just 14.4 overs. Mads Henriksen started the rot with three wickets in his second over, and then Hamid Shah chipped in with three more; they finished with three for 8 and three for 17 respectively.
But it was Jonas Henriksen who completed the rout, taking three wickets in ten deliveries without conceding a run. Abdul Hashmi claimed four catches behind the stumps.
Herning bounced back with great spirit on Sunday, bowling hapless Albertslund out for 80 and going on to win by eight wickets.
Surya Anand was the main destroyer for Herning with five for 18, while Gulzer Khan took three for 11 and Razul Sauny two for 19. Raja Ali top-scored for Albertslund with 34.
Herning wobbled slightly when they replied and were soon 11 for two, but Ilyas Sauny (36 not out) and Surya Anand (22 not out) saw them safely home.
At Soraner on Sunday the home side fought out a low-scoring tussle with Ishøj, eventually losing by just one wicket.
Absar Khan (four for 33) and Javid Khan (three for 28) starred with the ball for Ishøj as the home side were dismissed for 137 in 48 overs, Vibhor Chowdhary top-scoring with 37.
Ishøj were well placed at 70 for one when they replied, thanks to Jawad Ahmad’s 29 and Delawar Khan’s 33, but they stumbled to 77 for four, and it took a series of smaller contributions from the lower order to get them over the line, a crucial ninth-wicket stand of 23 between Wasim Zakir and Javid Khan bringing them to the brink of victory.
Sidarth Mayar (three for 26) and Chowdhary (three for 46) fought hard all the way, but in the end it was Ishøj who took the points.
Farmers Caesareans moved into the final of Jersey’s Premier T20 League on Saturday with a comfortable 46-run victory over the Walkovers, sufficient to hold off a bonus points challenge from Old Victorians, who beat St Ouen Springfield by 4 wickets.
Although Farmers had won one more game than the Old Boys at the end of the round robin phase, a better bonus points column meant that in the end the margin between first and second was just three points.
Old Victorians will now meet St Ouen again next Saturday for the right to play Farmers in the final later that day.
Foundation of Farmers’ win on Saturday was a fourth-wicket stand of 62 in 8.5 overs between Asa Tribe, who made 56 not out from 43 deliveries, and Julius Sumerauer (32 from 30), which enabled them to recover from 40 for three and post 147 for five. Joe Bevis took three for 24 for the Walkovers.
Despite a 34-ball 49 from Nat Watkins the Walkovers were again unable to match their opponents’ core, and with George Richardson taking three for 21 they closed on 101 for eight.
At FB Fields, meanwhile, the contest between St Ouen and Old Victorians was much closer.
Ollie Nightingale’s 48 and Dom Blampied’s 34 enabled St Ouen to reach 127 for eight, despite economical bowling from Scott Simpson, James Duckett and Sam Dewhirst, and it took the Old Boys until the end of the 19th over to reach that target, Jonty Jenner’s 41-ball 54 the key to their success. Tony Kay fought hard for St Ouen with two for 19.
