The running of the USA’s inaugural Minor League Cricket (MiLC) season in 2021 has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
As reported by CricBuzz – whose owners Times of India Group also have a stake in American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), the successful group in the USA Cricket tender to stage a Professional T20 League system across the country – the MiLC is now tentatively poised to commence in the spring of 2021.
Organisers are said to be considering a few exhibition games, perhaps in a “round of intra-conference exhibition games played between the teams for a period of about a month and a half starting September 5” after due consideration of local COVID-19 impacts. A decision is expected by the second half of this month.
Despite the postponement of the event by a year, it has been reported that a player draft on August 15 and squad formation from the 2,000 registered players will still proceed. There has been no mention of whether this will include contracted overseas players or coaches such as former USA head coach Pubudu Dassanayake.
Minor League Cricket will see 24 teams from across the country compete in what will become the second tier of US pro cricket once Major League Cricket also starts in 2021 or 2022.
