USA Cricket launch umpire pathway with first courses

USA Cricket announced this week the opening of registration for their Level One course, the first ever under this governing body, and the entry point on their pathway for aspiring umpires across the country.

Level One: Umpiring Fundamentals is the first step of a plan laid out in 2020 to create an “overarching framework for the development of umpires within the USA,” and umpires around the country have since waited eagerly for the plan to be put into motion. The course is open to all interested USA Cricket members who are over the age of 12. Registration for the first session ends on June 20, but the announcement states that there will be additional sessions later in the year.

The course focuses on the fundamentals of the laws of cricket and their in-game application. Featuring a 3 hour instructor-led online group lesson followed by several health, safety, and sportsmanship courses, Level One will wrap up with a 50 question exam, and must be graduated in order to proceed up USA Cricket’s umpiring ladder

USA Cricket’s Umpire Pathway explained

‘In USA Cricket’s Foundational Plan we have identified the need to increase participation across all aspects of the sport as one of our key strategic objectives,’ Chair of the Development Committee Venu Pisike is quoted in the announcement. ‘Accordingly, we said we would seek to “design and deliver a pathway and related programs, education materials and certification to support all match officials in this country.” After launching the USAC Cricket Umpiring Program and Pathway in late 2020, today’s announcement represents the first practical step taken within that framework and the first-ever umpiring course designed and implemented by USA Cricket. We are well aware of just how vital this program is to the overall development of the sport across the United States. Therefore, we encourage anyone interested or aspiring to umpire at any game level to register now and get involved.”
