Under 19 World Cup Day 2 – UAE defeat Canada, PNG collapse

United Arab Emirates U19s (284/7, Naseer 73, Singh 2/38) beat Canada U19s (235 ao, Patel 96, Giyanani 2/10) by 49 runs

In the only all-associate match of the first round, UAE got their U19 World Cup campaign off to a strong start with a 49-run win over Canada. It was the Emiratis who won the toss the Group A game at Conaree Sports Club, St Kitts, and chose to bat first.

But it was the Canadians who won the opening exchanges. A wicket each for Ethan Gibson and Parmveer Kharoud, as well as a run out set the score at 47/3 in the 9th over. From there, the UAE batters settled into their work, setting the tone for the rest of the innings. Three consecutive 50+ partnerships, led by 72 from Punya Mehra and a quick 73 from Ali Naseer helped the UAE raise 284/7 in 50 overs. Kharoud would complete with 2/49 and Gurnek Singh 2/38 but the Canadian bowlers struggled to make inroads.

The Canadian reply started positively, with Anoop Chima compiling a swift 46. However, a steady flow of wickets for the UAE bowlers put Canada behind in the game. From 118/6, captain Mihir Patel combined with Kairav Sharma to make an 83-run stand. Patel would go on to make 96, but when he was out at 213/8, the writing was on the wall for Canada. The UAE bowlers would wrap up the Canadian innings at 235 to complete a 49-run win, with the wickets shared across the bowlers.

Canada’s and UAE’s next games are both against England, on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Zimbabwe U19s (321/9, Bawa 100, Kevau 3/65) beat Papua New Guinea U19s (93 ao, Aporo 15, Chirwa 2/11) by 228 runs

Papua New Guinea were outclassed by Zimbabwe, as the full members wrapped up a mammoth 228 run win in the Group C encounter in Trinidad.

Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to bat, but PNG made a bright start when Junior Morea snared the early wicket of Steven Saul. It would provide the highlight of the day for the Garamuts, as the Zimbabweans quickly built a series of partnerships. Zimbabwe captain Emmanuel Bawa led from the front with a century. Although the PNG bowlers were able to pick up late wickets, the Zimbabweans had already compiled an imposing total, finishing on 321/9. Rasan Kevau claimed 3/56 as the pick of the Garamuts’ bowlers.

In the reply, the PNG batters found themselves swept away by a strong Zimbabwean display. None of the batters passed 15, and six made single figure scores. The Garamuts were bowled out for a lowly 93 in 35 overs. The Zimbabwean bowlers shared 8 wickets between them, with the reamining two falling as run outs.

Papua New Guinea return to action on Tuesday against Afghanistan.
