Tim David earns mega IPL payday after bidding room war

Singapore-Australian all-rounder Tim David has become an instant millionaire in the IPL Mega Auction, sold to the Mumbai Indians for 850 Lakhs (US $1.1 million) today.

Known for his death-over power with bat in hand, David attracted the interest of no less than six teams in a bidding process that lasted over five minutes.

The Delhi Capitals started proceedings, though were eventually overrun after the Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings weighed into the bidding.

The Rajasthan Royals and IPL newcomers Lucknow made a late move, before the Knight Riders and Indians went blow for blow.

Mumbai won the race for David’s signature, with the franchise also signing English pace duo Jofra Archer and Tymal Mills.

David has enjoyed a fruitful period on the T20 circuit, making runs in the Pakistan Super League and at home in the Big Bash League, on top of a tournament victory for the Southern Brave in the Hundred men’s competition.

On top of a late flurry of 15 off six balls with the bat in the final victory over the Birmingham Phoenix, David chimed in with a low catch to remove David Bedingham, and the key run out of Liam Livingstone.

The form culminated in a late-season link-up with Royal Challengers Bangalore last season, though the right-hander did not attract the same suitors for 2022.

The 25-year-old made 218 runs at an incredible strike rate of 163.9 in BBL11, emulating the same form in the 2022 PSL, scoring 221 at an average of 55.25, at a strike rate of 206.54.

David will feature in the ‘B’ Qualifier for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, to be hosted by Zimbabwe in July.
