Switzerland re-apply for ICC membership

Eight years after being suspended by the ICC, Cricket Switzerland has made its first steps in rejoining the ICC with an intent to apply for membership.

An announcement by the association stated ‘(Switzerland Cricket) has notified the ICC of their intention to submit an application for associate membership before the end of the year’.

The announcement says the required documentation is currently being collated by the association with the aim of submitting the application to the ICC in November.

Switzerland was expelled from the ICC in 2012 due to non-compliance after the creation of a second cricket organisation within the country.

If the ICC accept Cricket Switzerland’s application they would officially claim associate membership during the ICC Annual General Meeting which is scheduled to take place midway through 2021.

If accepted into the ICC, Cricket Switzerland would become eligible for ICC funding in accordance with the ICC Development Funding Policy with the ability to sanction domestic and international cricket in Switzerland.

Cricket Switzerland has seen a significant period of growth recently including becoming a member of the Swiss Olympic Association, the main organisation for sport within Switzerland in 2018.

Switzerland also has a developing domestic set-up, with Geneva Cricket Club winning the recently concluded Cricket Switzerland Premier League.

USA Cricket was the last association to become an ICC member during 2019 and in the process became the ICC’s 105th member and 93rd Associate nation.
