Singapore’s Tim David signs with Surrey

Singapore international all-rounder Tim David has signed on with Surrey for the rest of the 2021 Vitality Blast, with the county making a finals push despite a depleted squad.

A core member of Singapore’s T20 World Cup qualifying campaign through his middle over hitting and off-spin, it’s been a career-making twelve months for David, who enjoyed a breakout season in the BBL for the Hobart Hurricanes, before a successful stint for the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL.

David had only just arrived in the Netherlands, scoring a century on debut for Quick Haag in the Hoofdklasse, before signing with the county.

Coming in at 35/3 last weekend, David struck 10 fours and 13 sixes in his innings, finishing 152 from just 95 deliveries, and dominating stands of 91 with former Dutch international Geert Maarten Mol (39) and 124 with Jeroen Brand (27). Unsurprisingly, his side won comfortably.

The T20 Blast’s classification as elite sport allowed David to make the trip over the English channel despite the Netherlands’ ‘amber’ status.

While intending to stay in mainland Europe to play league cricket and avoid home quarantine upon arriving in Australia, David has signed on with Surrey as a replacement for Kyle Jamieson, with the Player of the Match of the World Test Championship final succumbing to a glute injury during his stint with the county. Among other unavailable players for Surrey are Sam Curran, brother Tom and Jason Roy, all isolating after the Covid outbreak of the English squad. Will Jacks, another Surrey player, has been brought into the replacement squad.

David could face South Group high-flyers Kent, with Surrey likely needing to beat Gloucestershire in their final group game to ensure a quarter-final spot.

Elsewhere, in a boost to his T20 World Cup preparation, Dutch quick Paul van Meekeren has signed on with Durham as they make their run to the finals.
