Nordic Cup cancelled as Finland withdraws

Finland and Germany have each withdrawn their national teams from the planned T20I tri-series against Denmark. The 7-match series, titled the ‘Nordic Cup’, was scheduled between the 26th and 28th August. Each team was set to play 4 T20Is at Svanholm Park, Copenhagen.

The cancellation was made in a statement on cricketfinland.com, reading “Today’s announcement of new stricter border controls revised by the Finnish government due to increasing Covid-19 infection rates in Denmark, means in practical terms that travel is impossible at this time.”

Cricket Finland expressed their hopes of rescheduling the fixtures for next year, adding “We have provisionally agreed with Cricket Denmark to play the same T20I series early summer 2021.”

Cricket Germany later annouced their withdrawl via twitter.

The cancellation of the Nordic Cup leaves Finland without fixtures for the 2020 summer. Previously, they had been scheduled to host Group B of the European Qualifiers for the 2021 T20 World Cup. Germany last played against Spain in March, whilst Denmark’s only fixtures this year have been friendlies against Norway.

The article was updated on 20/08/2020 to reflect Germany’s withdrawal from the series
