Dutch coach Ryan Campbell out of coma after heart attack

Current Dutch men’s head coach Ryan Campbell is out of an induced coma after suffering a heart attack on Saturday in the UK.

The 50-year-old felt difficulty breathing and chest pains while out with his children over the Easter weekend.

As of early Wednesday morning local time, doctors made a successful move, with no evidence of brain damage, according to Campbell’s brother Mark who spoke on Perth radio.

“They’ve taken the heavy sedation off, so he’s actually woken up. Now they’re just look at trying to work out what’s wrong with his heart,” Mark told Triple M.

“They’re not sure now why his heart is still being arrhythmic. So that’s another issue that they’re now going to look at over there.”

Campbell had returned to Europe following the Dutch team’s tour of New Zealand, visiting visited friends and extended family in his home of Perth a week ago.

A passer-by, who had recently completed her CPR course, attended Campbell, who had a pulse when paramedics arrived about 15 minutes later.

Campbell was appointed Dutch coach in January 2017, and as a player represented both Australia and Hong Kong at international level.

Coaching in Hong Kong, Campbell also featured for Hong Kong in their 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign at 44 years of age.
