Nepal to insure players and staff as pandemic settles in

COVID-19 has led to a number of unusual and difficult circumstances for associations around the world to tackle. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), following governmental guidelines, have been forced into suspending all forms of cricket in the country due to an increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country, a decision which no cricket association would take likely.

However, Nepal’s cricketing body has taken measures to protect its staff, insuring 51 individuals against the virus. Men’s players (Senior), office, grounds and support staff are all included in the move, with over 50 people supported in total. The move is part of a multi-phase plan, with cover for other members under the CAN umbrella expected in future.

It would not be out of the question to suggest that there will be a number of Women’s players who will be offered insurance, though no word has been made in regards to their fate as of yet. The move is a positive one, as looking after staff and players’ welfare should always be a key part of any associations role, and it will be interesting to see what the second phase brings.

Sandeep Lamichhane is flying the flag for Nepal at present, representing the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League. The leg-spinner has been a shining light during the tournament, with consistent performances thus far.
