Sunday saw Jersey’s young cricketers take to FB Fields as the Fairway Super Series got underway. Each of the four teams played two games during what was a busy schedule of games, with the Every Child Our Future – Jersey Eagles remaining the only undefeated team.
The Eagles scored 380 runs during the team’s two matches during what was a successful day for the team. Will Hodgson made an important contribution scoring 70 runs during the team’s first game against the Bandits, then the team’s captain, Jack Stevens, scored 94 against the Titans. Eagles’ bowler Matt Webb also had a day to remember as he took 5 wickets during his opening spell against the Bandits.
The Shelter Trust in Jersey Titans won one and lost one during the opening round of games. Despite losing to the Eagles, the Titans won their opening game against The Lord’s Taverners Lightning. The Titans were able to successfully chase the 71 run target set by their opposition, despite losing seven wickets in the process. During the successful run chase, Toby Britton scored a vital 17* which was exactly what the team needed to help the Titans get over the line.
The Bandits boast the same record as the Titans, with the team also registering one victory and one defeat. The Bandits may have lost their first game against the Eagles, but were able to bounce back against the Lightning. Drew Boylan (4-11 & 59) had a stand out individual performance in the context of the game as he starred with both bat and ball. The run-chase came to an exciting conclusion with the team needing one run from the final ball, and Casey Thubron was able to handle the pressure, securing the victory with a boundary.
The Lightning did not record a victory during the opening round of fixtures but was able to obtain a bonus point during their first match against the Titians. The team’s record does not tell the full story as the matches were close, not being decided until the 19th and 20th overs.
