Ireland versus Scotland postponed

The planned women’s series between Scotland and Ireland, to be played at La Manga later this month, has been postponed. Cricket Scotland made the decision to withdraw their side following updated guidance with regards to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The sides were due to meet at La Manga, Spain, between November 20th and 29th for two 50-over matches and three T20Is. The matches were due to be the first for both sides since the Women’s T20 qualifier in August 2019.

Sustained efforts were made by both boards, and the La Manga resort to accommodate the series. However, the Scottish side were forced to withdraw as COVID cases continue to rise throughout Scotland and Europe more broadly.

In a press release, Cricket Scotland CEO Gus Mackay said ‘Organising this series was always going to be a challenge within the current environment. Our priority has always been for the safety of our players and, as a national governing body, we have a responsibility to react to the changed circumstances.’

In a separate statement, Cricket Ireland High Performance Director Richard Holdsworth said: ‘It was with great regret that we had to inform our players and support staff that Scotland has withdrawn from the tour on the eve of departure. Despite significant work and planning by all parties to mitigate risks in regard to COVID-19, it is regrettable that we are where we are. We are all disappointed for our squad as we know how hard they have been preparing for this series.’

Both boards expressed a desired to reschedule the series for early 2021.
