Germany Quadrangular T20I series postponed

The planned men’s T20I quadrangular series featuring Spain, Norway, France, and hosted by Germany, has been postponed. Rising numbers of COVID-19 cases across Europe and the extension of COVID-19 restrictions has forced the postponement of the event.

The series was originally planned to take place between 13th to 16th May at the DCB high performance centre in Krefeld. The matches were due to be the first played at Krefeld, and the first T20Is to be played in Germany. All four competing nations are set to feature in the European qualifiers for the 2022 T20 World Cup later this summer. Germany will play in Group B, hosted by Finland in July. Spain, France and Norway all play in Group A in June, also in Finland. As such, the series was set to be vital preparation for the teams.

However, COVID-19 cases are rising in much of Europe, including in Germany. With current lockdown restrictions in Germany extended to the middle of April, the possibility of hosting international cricket is quickly decreasing. Without a realistic prospect of hosting their series, the DCB (German Cricket Board) took to twitter to announce its postponement. The DCB remain hopeful that the series can be rescheduled for later in the year, although no dates have been given.

The announcement means the wait goes on for all four nations to return to international cricket. Germany and Spain last played over a year ago, in March 2020. For Norway and France, the wait stretches back to 2019 and 2018, respectively.
