Geneva win Cricket Switzerland Premier League

Geneva Cricket Club (CC) were crowned champions of Switzerland on Sunday when they beat St. Gallen CC in the final of the Cricket Switzerland Premier League. Geneva successfully chased a low total of 117 to win the annual 40 over competition by 2 wickets. Geneva clinched their 3rd title, and their first since 2005.

The Cricket Switzerland Premier League (CSPL) is traditionally run in two regional conferences with a knockout phase to decide the champion. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s competition was a knockout tournament with 14 teams participating.

To reach the final, Geneva beat Power Winterthur and Winterthur CC in the earlier rounds. Meanwhile, St. Gallen beat Aargau CC, CERN CC and Cossonay CC to reach their 2nd CSPL final in three years.

The final took place at the Grundenmoos ground in St. Gallen. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, but got off to a horror start, falling to 4/3 in the 4th over. Though the middle order recovered the score to an extent, St. Gallen were all out for 117 in 33 overs.

Although it was a low total, Geneva’s chase was far from straight forward. Quick wickets saw the score change from 30/2 to 40/5. Runs in the middle order were enough to see Geneva win by 2 wickets in the 33rd over.

Earlier in the year, Olten CC won the Pickwick T20 Cup, beating Geneva CC in the final. The tournament involved 15 teams, which contained a full schedule of games.

The final of the CSPL concludes the senior season in Switzerland. Outdoor cricket returns in February with the annual Cricket on Ice tournament in St. Moritz.
