The European Cricket Network (ECN) have completed the draw for the 2021 European Cricket Championship. The draw saw 15 national teams sorted into three groups ahead of the inaugural international T10 competition. The event will take place in Spain in September and October.
The draw took place between games during the final day of the European Cricket Series event in Barcelona. ECN presenter Vinny Sandhu hosted the draw, with the balls drawn by ECN founder Daniel Weston. After the draw, Weston confirmed the venue for the tournament, which will be the Cartama Oval near Malaga in Spain.
Fifteen teams entered the draw, featuring 12 national sides. Also present in the draw was an England Amateur XI, Scotland A and Netherlands A, the latter a late replacement for Denmark, who withdrew.
The teams were sorted into three pots based on their T20I ranking. In pot one were England Amateur XI, Scotland A, and Netherlands A. Pot two contained Italy, Germany, Norway, Romania, Spain, and Austria. Finally, pot three included Sweden, Belgium, Hungary, Czech Republic, Portugal, and Finland.
Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Norway, and Scotland A were drawn into Group A. Taking place between 13th and 17th September, this group will feature the first recognised T10 International games. The following week will see Hungary, Portugal, Romania, Austria and Netherlands A battle it out in group B. Group C will start on 27th September and will involve Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy and the England Amateur XI. Each group will feature 24 T10 games between Monday and Friday of each week.
The group winners, along with the two best runners-up, will return for the Championship week, which follows the same format as the group stages.
Further details, including fixtures for the European Cricket Championship, will be released closer to the event.
