Former Netherlands International Ryan ten Doeschate is poised to join the Kent County Cricket Club setup as a batting coach, effective from 1st January 2022.
As a player, the Dutch-South African all-rounder enjoyed a long and glittering career with Essex in County cricket (2003-2021), amassing more than 11,000 runs at an average of 44.30 whilst also taking 214 wickets at 33.84. He also captained the team to two County Championship victories in 2017 and 2019.
Ten Doeschate was similarly successful at the international level, representing Netherlands in 57 official matches and averaging a combined 54 with the bat and 21.48 with the ball across the T20 and ODI formats. Cricket fans will recall the 2011 World Cup when he first captured the attention of the wider cricketing world with two free flowing centuries against England and Ireland.
A veteran of T20 Franchise Leagues around the world such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Big Bash League (BBL), the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the Super Smash, ten Doeschate brings considerable experience to the role as batting coach.
Speaking on his appointment, ten Doeschate stated: ‘I’m excited to be given the opportunity to work with Matt Walker and the Kent squad, especially with the talented group of players that have just won the Vitality Blast and will compete in Division One of next season’s County Championship. I’m ready to start a new chapter of my career and use my experience and that of some of the others I’ve worked with to influence and improve the players and the group.’
It is yet unknown whether his county commitments will prevent ten Doeschate from staying involved in the Dutch setup as an occasional consultant or mentor. Coming on the back of a disastrous T20 World Cup campaign and a plethora of internal squabbles at KNCB headquarters, his presence will be sorely missed.
