Development drive continues for Cricket Namibia as new junior tournament launched

Cricket Namibia is looking to maintain the development of the country’s future stars with the setting up of a new school tournament aimed at U11 and U13 players. The event has been named ‘The Annual XCO & APS Junior Cricket Tournament’, being sponsored by XCO who are a leading supplier of Sports Equipment within the country and APS Cricket who specialise in the training of young players from the age of 6 through to 18 years old.

The tournament is open to traditional 11 player-team but also welcomes groups between 6-8 players who will have the option of competing in both 6-aside games and combined games. The event has been structured in a way to ensure that any cricketing background is welcome with Cricket Namibia welcoming sign-ups from schools, clubs, private academies and private entities. Further to this, individuals who may not be part of a team collective also have the opportunity to sign up to be a part of the tournament to ensure that nobody is left out.

The fixtures in the tournament will be arranged in a way to maximise playing opportunities; where children will play in as many games as possible. The maximising of game time allows children to gain as much exposure to match situations as possible whilst being in a friendly and welcoming environment; a factor that can only aid the development of players. The final measure to ensure inclusivity is the adaptation of the bye-laws of cricket to ensure that the game will be suitable for the age groups competing.

The tournament’s registration has already opened and is scheduled to close on the 30th July 2020. Both the U11 and U13 tournaments are then set to begin on the 21st Agust 2020 and conclude the 25th Augst 2020; with the tournament being held in the country’s capital city Windhoek.   

Followers of Namibian cricket will not be surprised with this move to continue the development of the young cricketing talent in the country. With the country having featured in the 2016 edition of the U19 World Cup which has developed fantastic young talent including Zane Green, Lo-handre Louwrens and Niko Davin it is no secret that Namibia is developing a reputation for discovering and developing talent. The talent pool in Namibia can only be expanding as well with the association aiming to expand cricket beyond Windhoek, with the country hosting cricket coaching courses in Outjo in the Kunene Region.

Cricket Namibia is putting into place steps that will ensure that the country’s national team will remain prosperous and competitive in ICC events for the foreseeable future.
