The Deutscher Cricket Bund (DCB) has announced a vastly expanded women’s league ahead of the 2021 season.
Previously featuring nine clubs, the 2021 Bundesliga Frauen will feature six new clubs, bringing the total to 15.
The new teams hail from across Germany. Joining the league are DJK SB Regensburg from Bavaria, TSV Asperg and Frankfurt International Cricket Academy from the South West. AC Berlin and Saxonia United also join from the east of Germany, whilst reigning men’s champions Kummerfeld SV will enter their newly formed women’s team.
With the number of teams in the competition expanding by 67% over the winter, the DCB has revamped the tournament structure to fit in the new teams. Previously, the 9 teams were sorted into 3 regional groups (South, West and North East). The regional winners then advanced to a 3-team final tournament. Now with 15 teams, the tournament will feature 4 regional groups (North, South, East and West). The group winners will advance to the semi-finals in September, with the final played on September 18th at the DCB high performance centre in Krefeld. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a representative Bundesliga did not take place in 2020. THCC Rot-Gelb of Hamburg will be defending the 2019 title in 2021.
The expansion comes of the back of an extremely successful 2020 for Germany’s women. The national team won all nine of their T20Is across 2020, including some record-breaking performances against Austria. The results are indicative of the huge strides cricket has made in Germany in recent years.
The expanded Bundesliga also comes ahead of an exciting 2021. The national team will make their 2nd appearance at the T20 World Cup regional qualifiers in Scotland in August. There, they will face the hosts, as well as Ireland, Netherlands, France, and Turkey. The fixture against Ireland will be the first a Germany side has played a fixture against a full member.
