Scotland matchup with Australia cancelled due to COVID-19

The highly anticipated T20 international between Scotland and Australia has been cancelled today due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Australia was scheduled to take on Scotland in a one-off T20 match on June 29 at the Grange as a lead up to Australia’s short-form tour of England throughout July.

In a statement released by Cricket Scotland today, it was agreed that staging the match would not be possible should the Australian tour of England take place later in the summer due to the costs and logistics involved in staging a one-off fixture in a secure environment.

Gus Mackay, CEO of Scotland Cricket said that despite exploring all possibilities, the ongoing circumstances made holding the match impossible.

“Whilst this is disappointing news for us all in Scotland, we have explored all potential options and concluded that it is no longer possible to play the men’s T20 international against Australia,” Mackay said.

The cancellation of the landmark fixture draws a curtain on what would have been a historical month for the Saltires, with a T20 and One Day International match against New Zealand originally partnering the June 29 matchup with Australia.

The matchup at the Grange would have been the first time Scotland has hosted Australia in seven years, with the Scots having not faced the Australians since the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Australia.

Scotland will now turn its attention to the T20 Cricket World Cup in Australia, with the ICC yet to make a decision on the premier world T20 event scheduled for October.
