The ICC Women’s Qualifier Americas competition has been extended to include Argentina and Brazil in an exciting move for both the women’s game and South American cricket. Previous editions of the competition saw a two teamed competition with USA and Canada competing.
The Argentinian and Brazillian teams have been competing at the South American Championships with the most recent competition being held in 2019. During that competition, Brazil was undefeated as the team won their four group stages games and went on to beat Argentina in the final; while Argentina’s losses came against Brazil. The pathway breathes life into South American cricket as a team from the continent would now be able to qualify for the World Cup.
The previous ICC Women’s Qualifier Americas was also held in 2019 with the USA team going through to play in the 2019 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier after winning all three games against the Canadians. But now there will be increased competition to secure that position in the qualifying event.
However, the move could be seen as larger than just what it is on the surface as it shows that developing cricketing countries have the opportunity to become integrated into world cup qualification pathways. For the global game to continue growing, the increased diversification of teams qualifying for the Women’s World Cup is fantastic for the growth of the game and gives others the chance to work towards a target.
Only time will tell how the inclusion of the two teams will change the landscape of the ICC Women’s Qualifier Americas competition and the World Cup in general but it promises to be an exciting period for the two countries and women’s cricket as a whole.
