U-19 World Cup Day 5 – Dewald Brevis hundred takes South Africa U-19 past Uganda

Dewald Brevis’ century was the difference between South Africa and Uganda, the former beating their Associate neighbours by 121 runs and consigning the Baby Cricket Cranes to a place in the Plate competition.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first, but did not get off to a flyer, as Pascal Murungi and Juma Miyaji kept the openers quiet, the former also picking up the first wicket. The game’s momentum changed with the introduction of Brevis who was aggressive from the get go.

Uganda missed multiple chances to get Brevis early – on zero and nine respectively – but once set, the batsmen unfurled a number of glorious shots on the way to his century.

Brevis was eventually out for 104, and the South Africans ran out of wickets and steam, finishing on 231/9. Joseph Baguma had impressively economical figures of 1/29 from ten overs, while Captain Pascal Murungi (3/53) and Juma Miyagi (3/33) chipped in with wickets.

In the chase, the pace of the South African bowlers troubled the Ugandan batters, with most of them looking very unsure in their approach.

Only Isaac Ategeka (29) was brave enough, receiving some support from debutant Fahad Mutagana (16) and Cyrus Kakuru (14). If it wasn’t for the 27 extras given by the South Africa, Uganda could been all out for less than 110.

The win was South Africa’s first of the tournament, after a loss in their opening game to India in their opener. Meanwhile Uganda lost their second game after losing to Ireland in their opening game.

Uganda will take on favourites India on Saturday in their final group game.
